WHY GOG IS THE NEXT MAJOR MIDEAST WAR – NOT PSALM 83

So many students of Bible prophecy have been influenced by the wonderful books of Brother Bill Salus and his studies on how Israel is restored in the latter days, growing in influence and wealth in the Middle East.  Of course, it must be said that Israel’s increased prestige seems always to come at the expense of its Islamic neighbors.  Salus’ most memorable teaching argues that Psalm 83 is a prophetic psalm, identifying Israel’s enemies that encircle it whether 3,000 years ago (when Asaph wrote this psalm) or in our day today.  These enumerated enemies seek Israel’s destruction; enemies which wish to eliminate the name of Israel forever. Instead, as the Psalm concludes, we find the most vital message of the Psalm: that God’s true name will be made plain – His name being Jehovah – most certainly not Allah.

Many other eschatology students over the past decade have been convinced that Islam will become the dominant religion of the last days, so much so that the Antichrist himself will be a Muslim.  One of the most popular and successful prophecy books of the past ten years is Joel Richardson’s The Islamic Antichrist.  Richardson is a fine author and like Salus, a sincere and dedicated teacher of Bible prophecy, worthy of admiration and respect.

In my latest book, The Next Great War in the Middle East: Russia Prepares to Fulfill the Prophecy of Gog and Magog, I challenge both of these popular perspectives and return the focus of biblical eschatology back to the conventional thinking held by the vast majority of Bible scholars. My conviction is that while these newer popular viewpoints have some support, a careful examination of the scripture and the geopolitical realities of the world today provide much stronger rationale to overturn Salus’ and Richardson’s views – at least as each of these respective gentlemen articulate their perspectives. In other words, in the first case Psalm 83 may in fact be a prophetic Psalm but it is not necessarily an “as yet” future war as Salus asserts.  In the second case, the Antichrist may be Islamic, but he is not Gog as Richardson claims.  Neither is there only one war (the War of Gog and Magog) at the end of days.  There are two, the second being the War of Armageddon. Thus, Gog and Antichrist are different persons.  The War of Gog and Magog are distinct events.  Yes, the Antichrist could be Islamic – but he may be an American, a European, or possibly (but unlikely) from an Islamic country such as Turkey as Richardson (and others) also contend.
